Brief Program Information
The Malawi Government’s commitment to eradicating poverty and vulnerability through social protection is reflected in its shift of policy focus from mere social support to a more comprehensive social protection approach that includes social assistance, social insurance, social security, social welfare services, labour market policies and other private and public instruments aimed at eradicating poverty, addressing vulnerability and combating social exclusion. The Poverty Reduction and Social Protection (PRSP) Division in the Department of Economic Planning and Development within the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization is mandated to coordinate and provide policy guidance to implementers and stakeholders of social protection and poverty reduction programs for them to effectively contribute to the achievement of sustainable national development.
In 2026, PRSP and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, commenced a three-year Programme 04/2026 to 03/2029 called “Systems Strengthening for Social Protection” (Social Protection Programme, SPP IV).
The programme is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) with the aim of strengthening social protection in Malawi in terms of coordination, efficiency and adaptiveness. The Project is implemented in Nkhotakota, Dedza and Thyolo district councils jointly with PRSP.
The programme output areas are:
- The institutional framework of social protection is strengthened
- The local authorities are strengthened in their capacity to steer and implement social protection and complementary services.
- The Malawi Social Registry is strengthened as a backbone for an adaptive social protection system.
- Social protection, including adaptive social protection, is better established as a key policy domain in the domestic political arena.
Internship Opportunity
GIZ SPP is seeking an intern for a period of 6 months from 1st October 2026 to 26 March 2027. The selected intern will support the Technical Advisors in technical and administrative tasks focusing on district implementation of the Malawi Social Registry On Demand Registration. This internship will provide the intern with practical experience in implementing social protection programs in Malawi, the Malawi Social Registry District coordination, exposure to project management processes, a technical advisory role, and networking opportunities with professionals and stakeholders in the social protection field.
Objectives of the assignment
The intern will support the Technical Advisors in achieving the goals of the Social Protection
Programme by providing technical and administrative assistance. The specific objectives
include:
- Support planning, implementation and monitoring of programme activities at district level.
- Providing administrative and logistical support for activities in the partner districts.
Expected Tasks
The tasks of the Intern will include but are not limited to:
Technical Support:
- Provide support in planning and coordinating project activities at district level.
- Assist in supervising and monitoring progress of district-level activities.
- Support in the preparation of required reports, presentations, and any other programme documentation.
- Support in developing Monitoring tools to be used by technical advisors and partners.
- Perform any other duties as required by the Technical Advisors.
Administrative Support:
- Support in the organization of workshops, trainings, communication & advocacy activities, stakeholder meetings and other activities by preparing meeting agendas, taking minutes, and following up on action points.
- Support field activities through budgeting, creating procurement requests and logistical arrangements with partners for field activities.
- Support in the preparation of travel requests, back-to-office reports and travel settlements for project activities, when needed.
- Support internal communication and filing of documents according to Programme and GIZ standards and knowledge management expectations.
- Desired qualifications and competencies
- Recent graduates with a University Degree in development studies, social sciences, community development or related fields.
- Experience or interest in social protection, poverty alleviation, or related fields is highly desired.
- Familiarity with digital data collection tools e.g., Kobo Toolbox
- Conversant digital solutions and Monitoring and Evaluation systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong communication and facilitation skills in English and Chichewa.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Willingness to travel to districts and work in field conditions.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and effective time management.
- Willingness to work in a multicultural environment and can easily adapt to changes.
- Interested to learn, acquire new skills and quick in thinking.
