About Mount Mulanje Conservation Trust (MMCT)
Established in 2000, the Mount Mulanje Conservation Trust (MMCT) supports the Department of Forestry, local partner organisations, and surrounding communities in implementing ecological management priorities within the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve.
MMCT promotes the sustainable management of natural resources across the Mount Mulanje Biosphere Reserve, advancing conservation, community development, and sustainable livelihoods. As part of its ongoing organisational transformation, MMCT is seeking a dynamic Assistant Accountant to strengthen its Finance and Administration Department.
Job Overview
Reporting to the Finance and Administration Manager, the Assistant Accountant will support the management of financial records, transaction processing, financial reporting, budgeting, payroll administration, and statutory compliance. The position also provides supervisory oversight to selected administrative and support staff.
The Role
The successful candidate will:
- Financial Management
- Record, process, and maintain accurate financial transactions using QuickBooks.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of accounting records.
- Maintain organised financial documentation and filing systems.
Accounts Payable and Receivable
- Manage supplier and customer accounts.
- Reconcile accounts payable and receivable.
- Process invoices, payments, and receipts within agreed timelines.
Bank and Cash Management
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations.
- Maintain and update cashbooks accurately.
Financial Reporting and Budgeting
- Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Support financial analysis and management reporting.
- Assist in preparing annual budgets.
- Monitor expenditure against approved budgets and report variances.
Payroll and Compliance
- Process monthly payroll and generate payslips.
- Prepare statutory returns, including PAYE, Withholding Tax, pension contributions, and other regulatory submissions.
- Ensure compliance with financial legislation, organisational policies, and internal procedures.
Audit and Payment Processing
- Support internal and external audit processes by providing required documentation.
- Verify payment requests and ensure timely processing in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Supervision and Administration
Supervise and coordinate the work of:
- Gardeners
- Security Guards
- Office Receptionist
- Office Cleaner
- Finance and Administration Intern
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Finance and Administration Manager.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 to 3 years’ relevant experience in a similar role.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online or similar accounting software.
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- High level of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure while maintaining high-quality standards.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong leadership and human resource management skills.
- Self-motivated, honest, and a good team player.
- Part qualification with a professional accounting body such as ICAM or ACCA is an added advantage.
- Membership with ICAM and the Malawi Accountants Board (MAB) in good standing is an added advantage.
